Start with a nicely seasoned (very dry) turning blank. In this example, an 8” X 8” blank of beautiful Myrtlewood is cut into four 4” square blocks.
Determine the center of the block, long grain facing up, and draw a circle. Back to the band saw for some excess material removal. Then on to the lathe using a drive and tail center set-up.
Rough round the piece, making a shoulder cut on one of the ends for later “spigot” mounting to a chuck.
Now that’s a bunch of blanks! Here, the Myrtlewood blank is mounted to a four-jaw Nova chuck. If you don’t have a self-centering chuck...buy one...they are worth the $80 to $150 it’ll cost you. Position your tool rest at the end of the piece, just below the center point. |
