Make an orientation cut 1/8” deep or so using a chisel. Then, using a gouge, bore out excess wood until you get to the desired depth. Use the chisel or scraper to clean-up the inside wall.
Shape and sand the top’s body to your liking, apply sanding sealer and a little soft wax before the body is parted-off.
Leave the remaining piece (after the body is parted-off) in the chuck. This will be the box’s top. Cut two levels of tendon...one will be used as a spigot when the top is flipped (later). The inner tendon’s OD should match the body’s ID. Using a chisel, make a little angle-cut so the top fits flush against the body.
Insure the top’s tendon fits snugly into the body’s hole. Then sand the tendon surface. Next, use some sanding sealer, then un-chuck the top, flip it and re-chuck. Now, cut a decorative design into the box top’s top. |
